New School vs Old School

Which came first: the chicken or the egg? Who cares? Which is the best? Professionals say that wines, and other products, get better with age. The same can be said about everything. Is this true, or are the newer trends better than the old. With music, there are many genres. Most can be labeled into two separate entities: classic and new age rock.

True classic rock is a blending of music from the 1960s to the 1980s; however, some music from the early 1990s are now included in this genre. Hard rock, progressive rock, arena rock, and even grunge rock are the basis for the classic rock stations survival. The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Queen, Nirvana, and Lynard Skynard are some of the most noticeable bands associated with this time period. The most influential guitarist in the entire world, Jimi Hendrix, is considered one of the most played classic rock guitarists. Classic rock stations stick to the format of classic rock bands from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and early 90s mixed with 70s pop and R & B. Heart pounding, gut wrenching guitar riffs and recognizable bass guitar parts make classic rock distinctive among all other genres.

Modern or new school, rock includes the music from the late 1990s to present day. Artists such as Nickelback, The Cure, Morrissey, Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, and The Shins are included here. The music is generally a little less heavy, and sometimes even a little more pop, than the classic rock. Different modern rock radio stations play a different mix of music. Some stations stick to the overplayed popular music, while others play the more indie music that most people dont get the chance to listen to. Still, others prefer to play both indie and popular; giving to every fan what they want.

The question still remains; which is better, classic rock or modern rock? In my opinion, both genres are amazing. I enjoy the more active rock radio stations that play everything from Pink Floyd and Roger Waters to Fall Out Boy and The Cure. A decent mix of anything rock will get my blood pumping. There need not be an outright best genre. And as for the chicken and the egg.. maybe they came at the same time!
