Minor League Baseball Player Review - Garrett Olson

The following van insurance a review of Orioles minor leaguer Garrett Olson. What I wrote then: "Olson had a nightmare just getting the ball over the plate upon his call-up to Baltimore last season. That nightmare ended in early September with arm stiffness. Still, that hardly deflates Olson's status as one of the top pitching prospects in the game. The southpaw has average velocity and stuff for a lefty, but he has an out-pitch in his web hosting service comparison ball and has had excellent strikeout rates and success at every level. The 24-year-old has a chance to open the year in Baltimore's rotation and could be a great end-game pickup for fantasy owners if his minor league pedigree starts to hold true at the next level. Judging by his minor league control, it would seem that he does not have much left to prove in Triple-A."

Review: Olson didn't have much to prove in Triple-A. He had seven starts at Triple-A New Orleans, posting a 2.97 ERA and more than a strikeout per inning. He spent most of his time last season in the majors. While he did show flashes, he had a poor rookie season overall, posting a 6.65 ERA in 26 starts for the O's. Control was a major issue for the lefty throughout the season, and he also had trouble keeping the ball in the park with 17 homers allowed in 132.2 innings pitched. The Orioles will likely give him a rotation spot this spring without many other alternatives, but he needs to pitch better in order to push off another demotion to Triple-A. At age 25, he still has plenty of time to improve.
